Apparently there's a [You must be registered and logged in to see this link.]headlined "How a green taxes revolt in Redcar could force a change in Tory energy policy "

Anyone know what it's about? It's hidden behind a paywall.

What's happened to the Dorman Long Tower is what's happened to integrity in government under the Johnson regime

The timeline says it all:
Friday10th  : Historic England recommended listing (tower was due for full demolition on 18.9.21)
Monday13th  : Teesworks requested a review of the decision
Tuesday 14th : HE carried out a site visit/review as requested -  did not change recommendation.
Wednesday 15th :  Cabinet reshuffle.  Nadine Dorries (of all people) given responsibility for digital, culture,  media, and sport.
Thursday 16th : Dorries overturns HE decision following representations from (Tory) Mayor and developers.
Sat/Sun 18/19th :  Tower demolished

Nobody could pretend that Dorries, the moment she got her feet under the desk to face the many responsibilities of office,  gave this due thought.  She did it as a favour to a political friend.  Chumocracy as practised throughout the Johnson 'administration'.   Heaven help digital, media, and sport, let alone culture, with this one at the helm

You might be right Peter, but in this case it was the correct decision to get rid of an eyesore. There must be better things to preserve.

I agree totally Doz, but that’s not what Peter and Kalliopi post are about. What happened is yet more of this government doing as they wish.

They simply cut through the red tape and short circuited the public enquiry which would have cost a fortune and taken 3 years to arrive at the same decision.
It used to be called common sense.

There are ugly concrete structures and there are ugly concrete structures.  They have in common that they're ugly, and they're concrete.  There's one in Redcar on Holyhead Drive.  It too is protected by a heritage listing as a 'scheduled monument' - but I'd guess that most people round about would agree that it's ugly, and all the more so since they built the estate around it.

Would it have been ok if the estate developers had 'just happened to knock a chunk off it' with a JCB, then persuaded one of the Minister's political friends to seek de-listing so that a much-needed bungalow could take its place?  Would it then have been ok for the Minister to overturn the listing within hours of receiving the request?   Might we all have smelt just a whiff of corruption ?

That's what happened with the Dorman Long Tower.  I'm not making a case for or against Historic England's assessment of its qualities (I suspect that after the developers had stripped it of most of its interest, it would have eventually been delisted anyway).  I am saying that the whiff of corruption is overwhelming, and it seems endemic in this government's behaviour.

Still no mention of rules and regulations broken .
As for the " sound mirror " , that actually does have some historical place which can be recognised.
The concrete coal bunker's claim to fame was that it was seen by everyone passing on a train and it had Dorman Long painted on it.
A bit like Black Bridge at Redcar which has " Dazzer " painted on it ?

Would be interesting to know where the steel was made, that helped build The Black Bridge, back in the day.
