Found my "dream machine."
It's a Celestron 8" SE GoTo and comes with more stuff than I know what to do with.
I got it second-hand from a friend and it is in tip-top condition.

We took the telescope out last night for the first time in ages. Tried New Marske woods picnic area but ended up on the stray car park. Clear night. Watched the space station go over at 11:15. It was particularly bright and slow moving, so very good. Then looked at Jupiter and its moons. Looked at Saturn but couldn't see much really. It was windy and our scope was moving a lot. I think I must need to tighten the tripod somewhere. Went home at about 12 only to find the conditions for viewing were better on our drive. Not a totally unsuccessful hour or so anyway.

I saw the neowise last night. It is gradually moving west. I think tonight is supposed to be the best time to see it in the UK (clouds permitting).

I've just spent an enjoyable hour stargazing. The moon was clear and so was Mars.

This is the first night I've been able to get out there for months because it's always flippin' too cloudy.

I set everything up and started to align the scope with the app on my phone and then my phone decided to turn itself off because I forgot to charge it earlier. uhoh

I need three clear stars to get it lined up properly and I only managed two before the phone died so I was unable to use the app but still managed to get a good look at the Moon and Mars.

I hope it's clear termorrer.

Some info about Mars this month:-

Mars Opposition with Starry Night & SkySafari

A week before Mars officially reaches opposition on October 13, Earth and Mars will be at their minimum distance apart during the early hours of Tuesday, October 6. At that time, Mars will be 38.57 million miles, 62.07 million km, 0.515 Astronomical Units, or 3.45 light-minutes distant from Earth.

After Mars rises in the east on Monday evening, observers with backyard telescopes can expect to see the planet with more detail than it will exhibit for 15 years – especially after midnight, when the planet will climb highest in the sky. Viewed in a telescope Mars' maximum apparent disk diameter will be 22.6 arc-seconds. (For comparison, Jupiter's disk spans about 44 arc-seconds.)

Its Earth-facing hemisphere that night will display its bright southern polar cap, the dark Syrtis Major Planum and Tyrrhena Terra regions, and the lighter toned Hellas Planitia region. The planet will not be as close to Earth for another 15 years!

I went out for a walk with the daughter tonight at about 9pm. Ended up going over the road from Hawthorn road and onto the prom above the beach. Viewing was excellent. We saw maybe a dozen great shooting stars in half an hour or so. More than we typically see. Possible the Geminids Meteor shower, but that's just a guess.
