Don't know how much ice there is North and South Poles. But 10 metres seems a lot of water over the Worlds Oceans, bearing in mind there is more sea than dry or frozen land.

It's not all about the ice melting, Yiddo. It's about water expanding as temperature increases.

It's just that Santa's future looks a bit insecure... not sure how many more Christmases there'll be.

Swedish activist Greta Thunberg will be telling all the kids the North Pole is melting away with Santa and all his elves being drowned and washed away. Then the planet will be full of mentally disturbed children swelling the already over stretched NHS with even more dysfunctional families.

Not just children, jhc. It's true of mature adults too, when their fantasy worlds are exposed as false - as this exchange shows.

But it does seem to be stretching things to blame Greta Thunberg for something she's not done, is not going to do, and causes the breakdown of society.

Man-made carbon dioxide emissions represent only 4% of the total from all sources. The remaining 96% are natural, highly variable and in no way subject to human control.

Carbon dioxide is an essential trace gas for life on Earth. Without it, this world would be a lifeless mud-ball. Below about 170ppmv of carbon dioxide, plant life is no longer sustainable; leading to the consequent rapid extinction of all animal life (including humanity).

Many people argue that our terrestrial climate is primarily determined by the interaction between the solar wind and the Earth’s cosmic ray environment. These fluctuate sufficiently over millennial timescales to induce climate extremes spanning anything from Warm Periods (as currently) to Ice Ages. Variations in our solar orbit, precession of our axis of rotation, eccentricity of our orbital path, tectonic and other (non-greenhouse gas) factors introduce further perturbations.

It can also be argued that carbon dioxide is a climate tracker, not a climate determinant. When chronologically-synchronised, historical averaged global temperatures and carbon dioxide levels are tracked over billions of years, temperature changes always precede corresponding changes in atmospheric carbon dioxide levels by between 200 and 800 years (due to the massive heat capacity of the Earth’s oceans; which warm – and cool – only very slowly).

In summary, evidence of man-made climate change is debateable and the chance of changing the climate by actions in the UK alone are negligible anyway. Returning the UK to a medieval economy will be far more damaging than any benefit from reducing carbon emissions.  thinking

That is transparent rubbish. I'm surprised, jhc, that you should endorse it.

The first link is to an American journalist of the libertarian right, and it's posted on his own Facebook page – if he ever sought peer review for it, it probably came from a fellow Fox News journalist. But it doesn't challenge the reality of climate change – it merely points to the inadequacy of what we have done to combat climate change and pretends that's a good reason not to bother at all.

The second is a video produced by a lobby group of climate change deniers. If you want (though sadly, you probably don't) a real refutation of what it says from real scientists, [You must be registered and logged in to see this link.]

The third part, the scientific looking text that isn't sourced (though a quick search suggests it came from the Alliance of British Drivers) really says nothing apart from pretty transparent attempts to mislead. Like hinting that we rely on CO2 for life, therefore CO2 is a Good Thing and a bit more won't hurt. Or like our emissions account for 4% of a variable global total (eh?).

Climate change: UN negotiators 'playing politics' amid global crisis

Clipped -"As well as the pre-2020 question, the talks are stuck on two tricky, technical issues - one about the question of loss and damage, the other about carbon markets.

Article 6 of the Paris climate agreement deals with the trading of emissions reductions credits that might arise from a country beating its own pledges or from a public or private initiative that cut emissions, such as a renewable energy plant or the restoration of a forest.

Here in Madrid, as last year in Katowice, countries are struggling to agree the rules of how these markets would work.

A number of countries including Brazil want to carry over credits that were created under previous versions of this scheme.
The worry is that many of these historical credits are not real reductions.
If they are used by countries to meet part or all of their pledges they simply dilute real efforts to cut carbon."

As well as tragic loss of lives, who counts the emissions effect from here?

Don't think so, Kalli, not if one's sure of one's beliefs.... wink

The main question Jen posed was "Is it anthropogenic?", but I truly believe in nature.

That's a very blinkered view of things ff, also 'beliefs' are not facts

Well, being retired, I must admit to spending too much time on this here interweb and have absorbed lots of 'statements'. So much contradiction, the biggest that I can recall being that the 'climate change' brigade were as sure in the '70s that we would be in the grip of an ice-age by the millennium as they are about us boiling tomorrow.........

Therefore I have my beliefs. smile

Presumably without the UK either? It's a bit modest, but it's good any economically powerful bloc should agree, and no doubt work on cooperating to achieve it
