"It must be awful to be certain that you are right and be unable to convince a large percentage of the population of your certainty"

It is indeed, a1. Especially when you know that their mix of vested interests and stupidity is putting your children and grandchildren (not to mention the rest of the world) at great risk.

It looks like it was ripped off an article in [You must be registered and logged in to see this link.] which the article itself links to (for some reason the link in the Mail actually says New Scientist even though the link is to NG, which is a bit sloppy).

It also links to [You must be registered and logged in to see this link.] authored by the scientists involved.

I'm not sure what you want explaining. The Mail seems to be putting a particular spin on it that is not really borne out by the earlier articles. There is some surprise expressed that the processes seem to be more complex than originally thought but presumably that's the sort of thing they are interested in studying. If the Mail is trying to imply that this is evidence against AGW (I'm not sure it is - is that what you are reading from it?), it is worth noting that in that second article they say:

Quote :
"Our new data indicate an ocean warming compared to the measurements taken during the 1970s, especially deeper down. As well as this, the ocean has become less salty. Both are in keeping with what we know about the open oceans around Antarctica."

The True Cost of Green Energy

Biomass will provide up to 30% of our renewable energy by 2020. But is burning wood instead of coal environmentally friendly?

Reporter Antony Barnett investigates a subsidised renewable energy industry that turns trees into fuel, and asks whether burning wood instead of coal is really an environmentally friendly answer to climate change. He travels to the forestlands of the south-eastern United States to find one source of this controversial 'carbon-neutral' fuel, and the biodiverse wetlands of Virginia and North Carolina, where millions of tonnes of wood are harvested and processed into pellets, which are burnt in one of Britain's largest power stations.

The story is also covered in today's Daily Mail

May be a very good programme, though it's a pity about the title.... no real greens would regard the Drax 'alternative to coal' as either climate friendly or green. A pity the programmers (and maybe the Mail?) are perpetuating that myth.

Peter smile Just when I am getting over plastic bottles, and everything else in the sea that should not be there. We should be alright at Redcar We have a forest under the sea, but got to say the new Bio mass plant seems to be working pretty well, and does not appear to be giving out any harmful effect. Time will tell. It seems lorry loads of cut tree trunks are coming from somewhere on the North Yorkshire moors.

And the Japanese have found a wonder bug to eat plastic bottles.

Does anyone know where all the tree trunks/branches are coming from?

I see the Mail On Sunday has finally got around to admitting that what they published early last year was a steaming pile of manure, as I said at the time. (I seem to recall we had a bit of a 'discussion' about it.)

[You must be registered and logged in to see this link.]

Moral of the story: treat anything published by the Mail, especially if (as I have been saying for years) David Rose is the author.

Some trees come from managed woodlands on the Mulgrave Estate at Lythe .
Many more come from Forestry Commission management of woodlands on the  North Yorks National Park .
Essential clearances to preserve healthy woods .

Seems like we got it wrong -sea level rise is NOT caused by climate change. According to a Congressman from Alabama, it's rocks falling into the sea off the white cliffs of Dover and the California coast that are to blame.

Not sure what this has to do with global warming, a1? Other than attempting a hatchet job on one of the alternatives to global warming generation.

So when there's no wind, turbines don't produce energy? This is presented as 'news' for the edification of Daily Mail readers who maybe hadn't been aware of that simple fact, and you decide to post it here in a thread that was created to challenge the evidence that carbon fuels are trashing the climate. What's your game?

I can't think of any naturally occurring non-carbon (i.e. climate friendly) fuel that can, by itself, match the ups and downs of demand for electricity... there has to be a mix, and there has to be storage. Sometimes, wind turbines provide plentiful cheap energy that avoids tonnes of carbon being released to accelerate climate change; at times we need to rely on other benign energy sources, or storage (batteries, reservoirs, hydrogen etc), or else avoid being so profligate in our energy wastage.

You (like the Mail) are just setting up an aunt sally here. Because it's what you want to believe?

Incidentally, I see that the arch global warming denier and Brexiteer Lord Lawson has decided to seek French citizenship, to keep the personal European freedoms that he would deny the rest of us! Hypocrisy, or what?.

Peter, it has everything to do with global warming.
It's the Green Lobby which wants us to stop using carbon fuels which they claim are causing global warming.
The only problem is that eco friendly power doesn't guarantee to work all of the time.
Nuclear Power is seen by some as being the power from hell.
Coal is just about finished , despite China and India still building coal fired power stations. Instead of coal we can now burn wood , some of which is imported from Canada. Not at all green.
Gas is less " harmful " than coal but is still frowned upon.
There is an interesting site which I would think you know about Peter but I will post it in any case which shows our electricity use in real time and where it comes from.
