The idea that Britain was ever justified in "leading" these talks, or that it was in advance of other countries in the renewable energy stakes, or in any green thinking at all, is fairly laughable.

We have had decades of lies and broken promises about energy, its production and use, and the deployment and consumption of any kind of fuel.

It would be a massive international travesty if Britain were allowed to set the agenda or perform any kind of leadership at such a conference. A bit like those internet lists that include London in the "top ten world cycling cities", that sort of travesty.

"One for the greenies"

Other persons must not be informed about cars? Are you serious?

It does tend to explode the myth that electric cars are " green " though.
Diesel with particulate filters are apparently as, if not more ,green and are faster, have a longer range and are cheaper to buy.

I think you will find that it is the car manufacturers trying to make you believe that their electric products are somehow environmentally friendly, rather than it being an agenda of some mythical nebulous group called "the greenies".

Even those manufacturers are only claiming zero emissions at the arse end of the (battery-only, not hybrid) car itself.

As for whether the manufacture of a car is environmentally friendly... None of them are, regardless of what powers the motor.

Tying VED to CO emissions only was a ridiculous decision. Diesel NOX pollution along with particulate matter are more polluting and dangerous to health.

Tell that to the poor souls who have the misfortune to inhabit Brighton and Hove. They'll soon set you straight....

Are the inhabitants of those places particularly pro-electric-car? This is news to me.

Spog, I've never denied the global warming, just the fact that some believers think we mere mortals can control (at VAST expense) something that's been occurring naturally for millennia....

That is the point - what is happening now is not natural and it hasn't been occurring for millennia. If it had been we wouldn't be here.

I presume you are referring to ice ages and the like.  We have been in an interglacial for about 10 millennia and the climate has been pretty stable in that period, contrary to what your original statement implied. It is only during this time that agriculture has been established, along with settled civilizations and all of the technology that we now take for granted. This would not have been possible with a rapidly changing climate, hence my assertion that we would not be here.

Ice ages are caused by Milankovitch cycles - small changes in the Earth's orbit that affect how much energy from the sun reaches us.  The current warming is not consistent with anything like Milankovitch cycles - if anything it is in the wrong direction - and is extremely rapid compared with historical records.

What on earth does that comment have to do with what I wrote? Had you been on the pop? Though 6.55pm is a bit early even for a Friday.

I think it was the Dead Cat strategy. Worked for Cameron, why not for FF?

When you're in a corner, throw in a dead cat. It distracts everyone from the matter in hand. A strategy suggested by the Tories' US PR guru, Lynton Crosby, and used to good effect eg by Cameron in PMQ when he was being asked about the NHS, and chose instead to criticise Corbyn's clothes. It was the clothes that got the press coverage, the NHS was forgotten.

I must admit when I saw FF's comment about greenies I was tempted to rise to that bait, rather than think about Spog's more thoughtful fact-based post.

There's lots more if you google 'dead cat strategy'!

.... but we're getting off-topic! Which is what the dead cat's all about.....thinking

Eh? That's exactly what my post was about - the fact that current changes are not consistent with any natural processes that have caused previous changes in climate.

Only if you lay poisons first. Then you get a demonstrable evidential proof that dead cats correspond to the cessation of crapping. smile
