That's part of it, of course a1. You could argue that greed and power are the root cause too - as they perpetuate climate change by denying or ignoring the science. But climate change, in this case drought, create the conditions and unrest in which ISIS prospers and millions flee.

Increase in world population, the increased use of water for industrial purposes, added to the deforestisation which causes faster run-off of rainwater - these are the main contributors I think. Global warming should, in part at least, offset some of these by causing more evaporation, but I think we need more soil with trees and other vegetation to help to store some of it once it falls as rain.

I read somewhere recently that Saudi Arabia's aquifer is now sour and they are importing water until they can get desalination of sea water onto a bigger scale. In the meantime they are paying as much for water as other nations are paying them for oil. I'll try to find the source material.

This is partly right in that there will be more evaporation and a greater capacity for moisture in the atmosphere. However, this won't offset any problems as the most likely consequence is that places that already tend to be dry will get drier and places that are wet will get wetter. Roughly speaking, more droughts and more floods.

Bees could be just about gone in three generations.

I also got this today:-

The corridors of Westminster are buzzing with talk of bees. On Wednesday night 38 Degrees members and over 150 MPs packed a room in parliament to hear directly from experts about bee-killing pesticides. There was standing room only and a queue out of the door!

Photos of 38 Degrees members at the bee event in Parliament House

Bee-killing pesticides are currently banned, but they could be back on our fields this autumn. Liz Truss - the environment minister - is deciding whether to let this happen right now. [1] She’ll have big money lobbyists from pesticide companies in one ear, pushing her to say yes. But together we’re making sure we’re louder than they are.

At the event on Wednesday night - co-hosted by 38 Degrees and Friends of the Earth - we asked MPs to challenge Liz Truss and other decision makers face-to-face. And it worked. On Thursday morning in parliament they were grilled about bee-killing pesticides. MPs talked about the contact they’d had from constituents (that’s us!) and demanded that the government keep the ban. [2]

Your MP, Anna Turley, didn't come along to the event, but they can still speak to Liz Truss, Environment Minister and ask her to keep the ban. Can you send an email to Anna Turley sharing a short report with the latest science and ask them to email Liz Truss to demand she keep the ban on bee-killing pesticides? Click the link below:
[You must be registered and logged in to see this link.]

Together we’re doing all we can to make sure Liz Truss and her team keep the ban on bee killing pesticides.

We chipped in to fund a report on how much bees help our economy - and it made it into the news. [3] After our event, hundreds of MPs are now campaigning to keep the ban. Over 380,000 of us have signed our bee petition - and as Liz Truss’s team walked to work this week they saw this image on the pavements around Westminster: [4]

Let’s keep up the pressure. Beecause our bees are worth it. Can you write to Anna Turley, share a brief report with the latest science and ask them to push Liz Truss to make the right decision? Click the link below:

Thanks for being involved,

Cara, Megan, Maddy, Nat & the 38 Degrees team

This is a catch 22 situation. The pesticides we use at the moment are in the main soap and don't work. The pesticides which do work also work against bees.
We won't have GM crops which are resistant to pests and would not require pesticides.
You choose.

"Bees contribute more to British economy than Royal Family". And that's from the Torygraph!

Coal mining , railways , cotton mills, canals etc. etc. It's called progress. Fracking is the only way we will be self sufficient in energy in the short to medium term. To deny it is to throw our Country to the wolves who control our gas supplies at the moment. The film was also made to make a point without any balance.

The shale gas industry has more or less turned around the US economy. It would be wrong not to at least evaluate this natural resource.

The well completion methods are nothing new and are the same as tried and tested procedures widely used in the oil industry. if done correctly, and there's no reason they shouldn't be.

What we must do is make sure the oil companies don't walk away with all the profits.

@GGSS: Going back to Yearby Turbine posts.

Just watching BBC Parliament, it looks like Amber Rudd (Energy & Climate Change Secretary) has just scuppered Airvolutions plans.

She said the wishes of local residents will come first and in answering another honourable member's question said it also includes appeals to Planning Inspector.

EDIT: from the statement:

This Government was elected with a commitment to end new subsidies for onshore wind and also to change the law so that local people have the final say on onshore wind applications.

We are now acting on that commitment.

Alongside proposals outlined within the new Energy Bill to devolve decision making for new onshore wind farms out of Whitehall, My Rt Hon Friend the Secretary of State for Communities and Local Government has set out further considerations to be applied to proposed wind energy development in England so that local people have the final say on onshore wind farm applications.

Have a look at the TSI figures here [You must be registered and logged in to see this link.]

They show the sort of reduction in solar output that we could expect if the predictions in the reported paper are correct: i.e. about -1 W/m^2.  However, because of the shape of the earth and its albedo, the actual effect will be around -0.2 W/m^2.  This is the reduction in energy reaching the Earth during this 'ice age'.  In comparison, the current rate of CO2 rise is causing an increased forcing of about 0.4 W/m^2 per decade.  So the reduced solar output will counterbalance about half of this for a decade or so but it is only a temporary effect for that decade.

Wow that was quick Spog. It was only a joke. Very impressive figures though. If I didn't know otherwise I could say you've been rehearsing this for months.

Good job that Planet Earth has Professor Church to help! Such a renowned scientist is who humanity really needs in its hour of need.

I think you're shooting the messenger - because you don't like the message, and a pop singer makes an easy alternative target. There's nothing new in the suggestion that climate change had a significant part in setting up the conditions for rebellion against an uncaring regime in Syria. If you think about it, climate change (whatever its cause) is, by definition, going to hit agricultural production, water supplies etc - and that in turn leads to poverty, unrest, mass migration etc. The conditions under which everything from ISIS to UKIP thrives.

Discuss. But try googling "climate change syria" first, and best ignore the Charlotte Church references!

Strange that. The Met Office have never mentioned detention without trial, torture and summary executions for disagreeing with an oppressive regime as being factors.
I think there is a phrase Peter which includes the words straw and clutch which is being used in a highly inappropriate manner and is trying to get climate change into everything which happens on the Planet , however tenuous.
Besides that she was a complete goon. A typical Champagne Socialist.

Leaving Ms. Church out of the matter, her politics being irrelevant, I find myself agreeing with auguste (unusual, that). Setting up the conditions for rebelling against an uncaring regime is caused by having an uncaring regime. Climate change might well be real and might well be affecting Syria; the suffering of vast numbers of Syria has a lot more to do with the regime and the fanatics than it does to do with the climate, though.
