PostSubject: Writing accented vowels and other special characters   Mon Mar 22, 2010 3:39 pm

To write in languages that use accented vowels (French, German, Spanish etc) and other special characters you need to use ALT KEY NUMERIC CODES which are the ANSI/ASCII standard codes for the characters required. The most widely used are listed below.

This is the method if you have a full keyboard with a numeric keypad on the right. (Laptops will be discussed in next post). This should work in most Windows applications (including here) but in the wonderful world of IT there are not really any standards so whether everything works in your own particular word processor, email editor, messaging etc depends on the character set that the particular application will support.

The method is very simple.

Switch on Num Lock on the numeric keypad (the light should illuminate).
At the point you want the character hold down the ALT key and enter the four digit code using the numeric keypad.
The character should appear when you release the ALT key.

NOTE: You must use the numeric keypad, NOT the 'normal' number keys on the main keyboard area.
You must enter the full four digits, including leading zeros.

Accented letters

Accent A E I O U Y
GRAVE CAP 0192 = À 0200 = È 0204 = Ì 0210 = Ò 0217 = Ù ----
grave lower case0224 = à0232 = è 0236 = ì 0242 = ò 0249 = ù ----
ACUTE CAP 0193 = Á 0201 = É 0205 = Í 0211 = Ó 0218 = Ú 0221 = Ý
acute lower case 0225 = á 0233 = é 0237 = í 0243 = ó 0250 = ú 0253 = ý
CIRCUMFLEX CAP 0194 = Â 0202 = Ê 0206 = Î 0212 = Ô 0219 = Û ----
circumflex lower case 0226 = â 0234 = ê 0238 = î 0244 = ô 0251 = û ----
UMLAUT CAP 0196 = Ä0203 = Ë 0207 = Ï 0214 = Ö 0220 = Ü ----
umlaut lower case 0228 = ä 0235 = ë 0239 = ï 0246 = ö 0252 = ü 0255 = ÿ

]
TILDE A N O
CAPITALS 0195 = Ã 0209 = Ñ 0213 = Õ
Lower case 0227 = ã 0241 = ñ 0245 = õ

Other useful stuff

0161 = ¡ Upside down exclamation mark (Spanish)
0191 = ¿ Upside down question mark (Spanish)

0199 = Ç Capital C cedilla (French)
0231 = ç Lower case c cedilla (French)

0223 = ß Sharp/double S (German)

0198 = Æ Capital ligature
0230 = æ Lower case ligature

Once you have written your bon mot or whatever most text effects such as italics, colours or font size should work as normal. For instance it is usual to embolden the ß character.

There are many other symbols available for things such as maths or Greek but the degree to which they are supported depends on the application. The above are all tested as illustrated.

PostSubject: Using ALT CODES on a laptop   Mon Mar 22, 2010 3:59 pm

The previous post describes using ALT CODES where you have a full numeric keypad on a standard keyboard. If you are using a laptop without the keypad you can still use these codes for accented vowels and other symbols but you need a slightly different method.

PLEASE NOTE I DO NOT HAVE A LAPTOP TO TEST THIS METHOD BUT I THINK IT SHOULD WORK. PERHAPS SOMEBODY WHO DOES WOULD LIKE TO TEST IT AND LET US KNOW.

Look for a "Function" or "Fn" key normally near the bottom left of the keyboard.

Look for a button with "Num lock" written in the same colour which is usually near the top right of the keyboard.

While holding "Function" press and release "Num lock".

Enter ALT CODES using the method above but to enter the actual numeric alt code use the keys with numbers in the same colour as the Function (Fn) key. Normally "U" has 4 on it for example.

Switch "Num lock" off in the same way as you switched it on to continue using your keyboard normally.
